The Trump Administration has made several notable announcements about raising the US’ maritime profile, and they have placed particular emphasis on restoring domestic shipbuilding capacity. As cited in the New York Times, BRS data demonstrates the dominance of Chinese shipbuilding in the past decade, with 6,765 of 13,928 delivered vessels (non-naval commercial ships above 3,000 Dwt) built in Chinese yards. Japan, the next largest builder, delivered 3,120 vessels in that same time. South Korea delivered 2,405, and the United States delivered 37, illustrating how dominant East Asian shipyards have become.
